Wednesday afternoon, with snow drifting out of the sky, Caroline began early labor. We spent the night at home having a good time laughing and laboring with our doula Lia. As the night came to a close though we hadn’t progressed past eary labor and were all really tired. So we slept and our labor sort of faded away. In the morning we had almost nothing going on.
Thursday was frustrating. We tried every natural method we could think of to get labor going but the contractions just weren’t picking up in strength, intensity, or frequency. As the night came to a close we kicked it; pulled out all the stops. Relaxing music, candlelight, deep breathing, light touch massage, everything we envisioned for our birth was going on. We had an excellent energy and for a few hours it seemed like things were picking up. But…no progression. So two weeks after our “due date” and two days of early labor with no progression we decided it was time to get some help. Our midwife Kim drove us to Loveland and the Medical center of the Rockies.
We got here pretty late. So late it could just as easily be called early. After check-in, a gauntlet of questins about our medical history, and a checking of the basic vitals, we were able to settle in and get some much needed sleep a little after 4 a.m. During the night Caroline got checked up on a few times and our nurse and doctor changed over.
Today has been excellent. The staff here is great and very supportive. Our nurse is named Sage and she used hypnobirthing for her birth. She is great. Our Doctor is named Kozak and she is also great. She has a necklace of the venus with a swirl on its belly. To the point though, Caroline and Jonah are both absolutely fine. So much so that the Doctor said if we wanted we could even go home and give it some more time despite how late we are. We decided to stay and give a slow pitocin drip a try to get things started. We wanted to rupture the membranes but couldn’t safely do so because of Jonah’s position. The Pitocin seems to be doing the trick though. At least the contraction are going nicely and we have every expectation that they will continue to pick up. Caroline was looking over a bunch of paperwork and sitting down. She started to have some trouble focusing, stopped checking the paperwork, stood up, and watched the monitor keeping track of contractions go wild. So things are looking good for a birth either tonight or early tomorrow. No worries though. Everything is going to be fine. Caroline is fine, Jonah is fine, and that’s all that really matters.
